Analysisfor businesses
The study compares visits, not impressions or brand effects, and focuses on US ecommerce. Even so, the conversion gap (0.37% vs 1.17%) is wide: ChatGPT users seem to be at an earlier stage of buying. That 73 of 87 advertisers recorded no paid sale suggests the channel currently serves discovery more than demand capture. The paper also estimates that the arrival of ads coincided with a 6% to 8% drop in the organic referrals ChatGPT sends to shops, although visitors who still came bought at the same rate.
